When moving to a foreign country, it is important to bring the basics with you. This will help make the transition easier and less stressful. Consider bringing the basic toiletries needed, like your toothbrush and toothpaste, but also bring a pillow and some sheets as you may not have time to go and find a mall on your first day of arrival. Having some of the basic necessities, toiletries and items you anticipate needing daily will alleviate some stress too since you don’t have to worry about finding a store that offers what you need.
Another thing to consider is food. If you are moving to a country where you do not know how to cook, it may be a good idea to bring some non-perishable items with you that can be easily prepared. This could include things like instant noodles, cereal, etc. It is also a good idea to stock up on snacks that you can easily grab when you are feeling hungry.
Eating Out versus Cooking for Yourself
If you are used to cooking your own meals, then you may want to continue doing so even after your move to Toronto. This will help reduce cost and there are ways you can do this on campus with ease. Consider purchasing an "air fryer" or an "instant pot" as typically you cannot cook in your suite and have to use a shared kitchen. These appliances can come in very handy to whip up quick meals and stay healthy at the same time.

Eating out can be expensive, but if you do your research you can find some great deals at local restaurants. If you are on a budget, it is still possible to enjoy the cuisine of various cultures without breaking the bank. There are also many international students who are looking to save money and would be willing to cook for you in exchange for some extra cash. This is a great way to make friends and save money at the same time!
Also, make sure you locate the closest grocery to store to your place of residence. Convenience stores have basics but you may want to look for the closest, No Frills, Walmart, Food Basics etc. to know where to get the bulk of your groceries. There are also flyers available on their respective apps and websites which can help you save if you do comparison shopping.
