What are the English Requirements to Study in Canada?

Pre-admission English Language requirements need to be met before being admitted into a Canadian education institution . We will go through four different options you have available when applying with us. Each type has its own set of specific requirements that need to be met in order to be considered for admission into different types of programs.

The requirement for getting admitted to a college program depends on whether you apply for an advanced diploma program, a degree program, or a post-graduate program. Now if you've already consulted with FAS-T Education, we typically recommend going for an advanced diploma program, but we will discuss all the requirements at all levels to give you the information you need. Here is a simplified table of all minimum English requirements for different program levels.

TOEFL

TOEFL is the most common Pre-admission English Language Test that you might have heard about but it’s not the only option as you will discover in this post. It is an internationally recognized test that measures someone's ability to use and understand English in an academic setting. In order to meet the TOEFL Pre-admission English Language requirement, you must get a minimum score of 80 or higher on the internet-based TOEFL test. These requirements are for the Internet-based version and not the paper-based version. If you are sitting a paper-based version, get in touch with us and we will give you more details as required for your program.

IELTS

IELTS is another Pre-admission English Language test that is similar to TOEFL. It is also an internationally recognized test that measures someone's ability to use and understand English in an academic setting. The difference between IELTS and TOEFL is that IELTS is offered in two different versions: the Academic Version and the General Training Version. The Pre-Admission English Language requirement for IELTS is a score of 6.0 or higher on the Academic version.

To write an IELTS test, contact your local test centre or the British Council offices to find out the dates for testing. Also, make sure you're sitting for an academic version of the test and not the general version.

Duolingo

The Duolingo test is a more recent addition to the list of accepted tests and is our highest recommendation for applications due to the convenience of taking the test online in one (1) hour and results returned within two days. Check with us to ensure it’s an accepted format before registering; however, at the time of writing this post, duolingo is accepted at more than 3500 educational institutions across the globe.

High School English

The third option is your high school English. Applications from some English-speaking countries are exempt from submitting English Language Proficiency test scores and are required to submit transcripts and credentials showing completion of English. In most cases, all level graduates in the IB program have an exemption if you have completed first language English with a minimum grade of C or higher, but of course the higher, the better.
