If you're coming to Canada in the winter, be prepared for some cold weather! Even in southern Canada, temperatures can dip below freezing. So make sure to pack your warm clothes! And if you're from a country that doesn't celebrate Christmas or other winter holidays, be prepared for a festive Canadian winter. There are lots of fun activities to enjoy during December and January - like bonfires, tobogganing and caroling! So get ready for a fun (and frosty) Canadian winter!

Other things to keep in mind when arriving in Canada in the winter:

  • The days are shorter, so there's less daylight to enjoy. Make the most of it.

  • Snow and ice can make walking or driving tricky. Be careful and take your time.

  • Winter is a great time to try new outdoor activities like skiing or snowboarding.

  • The winter scenery in Canada is beautiful, so make sure to take some time to enjoy it!

We don’t recommend you purchase gear (winter jackets, boots etc.) from your own country unless you already live in a comparable climate. Usually these items are best bought locally as they are designed for the Canadian winters. You might want to settle for something basic at Walmart for e.g. or do your research in advance and purchase something really good if your budget permits. A jacket at Walmart may cost far less than one at Canada Goose or Aritzia for example.. You will likely want a change in a year or so, going the Walmart route will allow you to really investigate what you want and purchase it during your second winter.

Also consider good quality gloves, a scarf to protect your neck and always remember the key to staying warm is to layer with multiple clothing so that you can remove a layer should you want to adjust with changes in climate throughout the day.

So there you have it - a few things to keep in mind when arriving in Canada in the winter. With a little preparation, you'll be able to enjoy all that this season has to offer!
